Better Pulse
Better Pulse Overview
Better Pulse is developing new crops that can endure higher temperatures, low water requirements, and low fertilizer requirements, while having a high nutritional profile.
The company will be utilizing CRISPR technology, for gene editing, to improve Cowpeas as a crop for food. Currently, Cowpea cannot be mechanically harvested since it is a “spreading plant”. Better Pulse have edited it so it is now a “terminating plant” ready for mechanical harvest. In the next phase, the company will use CRISPR technology to improve its Amino Acid profile, reduce its anti-nutritional factors and improve its protein functionality. Concurrently they will develop an extraction method to extract the protein fraction and formulate it into foods. Thus, converting an ancient crop for the requirement of the future.
The business model of the company will include B2C, B2B, and royalties. Since currently there is no Cowpea protein on the market, there is a need to introduce to the public this new protein. This can be done by establishing a B2C market with several products that Better Pulses will produce and sell. Once there will be traction for the product, a switch will be made to a B2B business in which the protein will be sold to other companies to be included in their products. Finally, the IP generated during the project can be transferred, with royalties’ payments, to other Ag-tech companies that wish to integrate Better Pulse IPs into their plants and crops.
Better Pulse Climate Tech relevance
Global warming is inevitable, and the traditional food crops we use today may not be suited for an environment with higher temperatures. When the global temperature will rise, traditional crops will suffer from a significant reduction in yield, causing food shortages on a global scale. Our company will develop and bring to the market new crops that can endure higher temperatures, low water requirements, and low fertilizer requirements, while at the same time having an exceptional nutritional profile.
