BugEra is a biotechnology company focused on enhancing the capabilities of the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) through genetic engineering. By developing specialized strains, such as BSFx2, the company aims to increase oil production in BSF larvae, offering a renewable lipid source that can be utilized in biofuels, including biodiesel, renewable diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel.
BugEra’s work addresses challenges in organic waste management and renewable energy by converting waste into usable materials, contributing to circular economy practices and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The company collaborates with biofuel producers to integrate its solutions into existing systems, advancing sustainable practices in the energy sector.

BugEra Climate Tech relevance
Harnessing the power of BSF, nature's best decomposers, BugEra introduces novel biomanufacturing to significantly reduce GHG emissions, with three key climate benefits:
Waste Management: BSF excels at transforming any organic waste, including manure (which has very limited recycling applications), into valuable products
Biofuel Advantages: Biofuel (Biodiesel, Renewable Diesel, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel) may reduce GHG emissions by 20-80% compared to standard liquid fuels. However, the expansion of biofuel is constrained by the availability of crop oils because these oils are used for feed and food and are not sustainable.
Sustainable Oil Alternative for Biofuel: BSF oil has 80% lower carbon footprint than crop oil used for biofuel. In terms of land use and water consumption, BSF oil is 254 times more efficient per acre and saves 99% of water compared to crop oil.
