DirecTrainSystems is developing a patented coupling-in-motion technology for the physical connection and disconnection of trains on the run at high speeds, quickly and safely. This holistic solution enables train platooning for a desired time slot and safe parting of coupled trains/wagons when approaching the destination. Using existing railway infrastructure, dynamic coupling increases a single track's capacity by ~40% and enables shared infrastructure and reuse of existing resources for greater transport efficiency.

Coupling trains in motion prevents wasting enormous amounts of energy for stopping at stations, decelerating, and accelerating again. It also cuts CO2 emissions and provides much better usage of rail infrastructure and equipment for sustainable mobility. Using existing infrastructure and rolling stock in a new, smarter manner, the company's solution prevents the need for incremental land and deforestation in order to expand rail infrastructure, thereby protecting and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. DTS's parcel delivery model enables trains/wagons with parcels to connect and piggyback to passenger or freight trains. According to rough calculation, over 70% of CO2 emissions can be reduced by using dynamic coupling to shift parcel transport from road to rail.
