EGAIA
EGAIA Overview
EGAIA is a recycling solution for package buyers and fast-moving consumer goods companies that aims to reduce the cost of recycling. The solution includes a street container that can quickly and easily accept multiple types of post-consumer packages and compress them using an automated built-in compactor. This reduces the need for manual sorting and handling, making the recycling process more efficient and profitable for processing plants, package manufacturers, and government agencies.
EGAIA has been recognized by organizations including the UNFCCC Circular Economy Prize, Choiseul 100, Alchemist Accelerator, and Business France and has received support from companies including Coca-Cola, Unilever, Volkswagen, and McDonald's.
EGAIA Climate Tech relevance
Approximately 91% of plastic isn't recycled, and for every ton of plastic waste burned, 2.9 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are created. EGAIA combats this problem by ensuring that recyclables are scanned, measured, and protected from spoiling, thus ensuring that they are recycled by a plant instead of burning in landfill. EGAIA's technology can remove 1,000 kg of recyclables in 2.5 hours rather than the usual 16 and can separate 1,000 kg per 10 hours instead of 100 kg, meaning that recycling is both easier and can be carried out on a wider scale. Both the decreased cost of recycling offered by EGAIA (€93k rather than €60k for 4,000 users per year) and the gamification of recycling through the use of rewards on its app means that recycling becomes more favorable for users, helping to prevent excessive CO2 emissions on a wider scale.
