Currently, the world is producing a growing amount of plastic, of which 49% goes to the landfill, 22% is mismanaged, 9% is recycled, and the rest is treated by incineration, gasification, and pyrolysis. Current technologies have a substantial carbon footprint and limited economic feasibility.
