dotPlay is developing Play, a dynamic file format that can encapsulate all types of digital media including images, videos, and music. Play is based on a distributed network called Playground, which manages the internal and external communication of Play files and enables the secure exchange of information between their logical sections and peers.
Play utilizes dynamic compression algorithms that automatically adjust their properties according to the type and complexity of input material. The goal of these algorithms is to compile a set of specifications that will allow a designated codec to encapsulate the smallest amount of information possible while still delivering a perfect viewing or listening experience.
Play can retrieve its embedded data from local and remote sources and allows file owners to control many aspects of their files' playback and access rights (e.g. runtime duration, number of playbacks, and permitted geolocation). With Play, file owners and content creators can control file properties such as remote data deletion/modification, geo-restrictions, playback limitations, instant storage mode switching, and content protection.
