Sensoil Innovations provides a Vadose-zone Monitoring System (VMS) that enables continuous, real-time tracking of water movement and contaminant transport from the land surface through the unsaturated soil layer to groundwater. The system combines in-situ sensors and sampling units with a cloud-based platform, delivering data on hydrological and chemical subsurface conditions to support early detection and decision-making. VMS is used across sectors including groundwater protection, managed aquifer recharge (MAR), earthen dam and levee stability, land remediation, and smart mining. The system has been deployed globally in large-scale monitoring networks and supports environmental research initiatives such as the EU-funded SCENARIOS project on PFAS contamination.

Sensoil Innovations Climate Tech relevance
By monitoring contaminants and water movement in the unsaturated zone, VMS allows for early intervention to prevent groundwater pollution, thereby reducing the need for remediation efforts which can be resource-intensive.
VMS also provides data on soil moisture and nutrient levels, helping farmers optimize irrigation and fertilization. This reduces the use of excess water and fertilizers, lowering greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural practices.

SCENARIOS is a 4-year H2020 Research and Innovation project (RIA) involving 19 partners from 10 European countries and Israel. The goal is to close the knowledge gap and achieve breakthrough TRL advances in the toxicology, detection and remediation of probably the most objectionable and widespread class of contaminants -PFAS-, with an unprecedented energetic balance and virtually no external chemical additives. A major effort is underway to develop Integrated Approaches to Testing and Assessment (IATA) of PFAS, including the new generation of congeners, to assist EC and EU countries in decision-making on these substances for environmental safety and human health.
